Attorney General's Office.

August 14, 1865.

To the

Secretary of the Interior.

Sir:

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of 8th August 1865, together with the copies of letters from Mr. Matthew Hopkins, formerly clerk of the District Court of the United States for the western District of Texas.

I have written to Mr. Hopkins advising him to keep safely the records in his possession, & saying that the question whether he still is, or not, Clerk, is a judicial one, about which I will not express an opinion.

I am most respectfully

Yours &c

James Speed

Attorney General.
