Sir:

In reply to your letter of the 31st ult. relative to the cases indicated in Capt. Crane's letter, previously sent you, the Attorney General directs me to say that the Secretary of War has approved your request for assistant counsel in those cases, & you are authorized to employ such as you may find necessary.
