Hon. Edwin M. Stanton,

Secretary of War.

Sir:

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt this day of your letter of the 23d ult., enclosing a copy of a writ of error, in the suit of Emil Grisar against General McDowell,—& other papers on the subject. Proper measures will be taken to guard the interests of the United States, & protect General McDowell in the suits pending in the Supreme Court of the United States.
