Sir:
At the request of the Secretary of War, ad interim, you are hereby instructed to act as counsel for John M. Ament, of Columbia, Tennessee, lately a wood‑contractor for the Army, in a suit or prosecution which has been instituted, or is in contemplated, against him for his action in cutting timber, under authority of the United States, during the late hostilities.
