January 7, 1868.

Hon. O. P. Morton,

U. S. Senator.

Sir:

The case of Rev. Mr. Smith, of Indiana, is now before the Attorney General for consideration. There is a legal question involved; but the great pressure of public business has thus far prevented the Attorney General from giving his opinion on the case. As soon as the question is decided, the action of the office will be communicated to you.

Respectfully, your obedient servant,

F. U. Stitt, Pardon Clerk.
