Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Attorney General directs me to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 11th instant, enclosing an account for services rendered in the case of the U. S. vs. H. D. Chaffee & Co.; and to say in reply that this office is not responsible for legal services except when rendered at the direct request of the Attorney General. The account is therefore returned for presentation to the office or Department by whom you were engaged.
