March 28, 1868.

Col. John H. Wheeler,

Bureau of Statistics.

Sir:

For your information I enclose a copy of a letter just received from Hon. H. J. Anderson, Auditor for the Post Office Department, relative to the case of Dr. S. J. Wheeler, late postmaster in North Carolina.

Under the circumstances, (which, however, have not been laid before him,) I incline to think that the President would hesitate to interfere.

Respectfully, your obedient servant,

John M. Binckley,

Assistant Attorney General.
