Hon. William H. Seward,

Secretary of State.

Sir:

The Attorney General ad interim has received your letter of the 25th ultimo, enclosing a copy of the communication of the United States Consul at Melbourne, Australia, relative to an alleged fugitive from justice from this country, and has directed the issuing of appropriate instructions to the United States Attorney at San Francisco, California, of which I have the honor to enclose herewith a copy.
