Secretary of War.

Sir:

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 21st instant, enclosing the application of Col. J. V.D. Reeve, 13th U. S. Infantry, for authority to employ counsel to defend himself and Lieutenants Pratt and Sanborne, of his regiment, in a suit brought against them in Montana; and to enclose herewith a copy of the instructions issued to the United States Attorney for that Territory.
