New York.

Sir:

I am directed by the Attorney General to say that your application of the 25th ultimo, for the advance of cases Nos. 406 and 407, on the docket of the Supreme Court, was referred to the Secretary of the Treasury for his consideration. The Secretary having replied that, in his opinion, it is important to the interests of the United States that the question involved should be settled as speedily as possible, the Attorney General is prepared to make the requisite motion, as soon as he shall be informed of the time to which you desire them advanced.
