Secretary of the Interior.

Sir:

I have the honor to transmit herewith the account, approved by me, and amounting to twenty five hundred dollars, ($2500:) of John H. Clifford, Esq. for retainer and professional services and expenses in the case of the United States vs. Jefferson Davis and others, charged with treason—and to request its payment out of the appropriate fund.
