Sir:

In reply to your letter of the 23d inst. I have the honor to enclose herewith a copy of a letter from the Attorney General to Joshua Tevis, Esq., U. S. Attorney for the District of Kentucky, dated December 1, 1865, instructing him to defend certain suits ag't Major-Gen. John M. Palmer.

The letters referred to in Mr. Bristow's communication of the 19th inst. (which is herewith returned,) were sent to your office July 29th, 1867.
