Sir:
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 11th ins't. with the enclosures, relating to a suit against Lieu't. Gen. P. H. Sheridan, in Leavenworth, Kansas, for acts done in the performance of his official duty as Commander of the Department of the Missouri. I have transmitted a copy of your letter, with the accompanying papers, to Sam'l A. Riggs, Esq., U. S. Attorney for the Dist. of Kansas, with instructions to assume charge of the defence of the suit in behalf of the War Dep't.—and to report his action in the case to you.
