July 27, 1869. Hon. Hamilton Fish, Secretary of State. Garrison, Putnam Co. N. Y. Sir: Your letter of the 24th inst. has just been received, and I have immediately caused instructions to be prepared and sent to the District Attorneys and Marshals of Vermont, New York, Michigan, Ohio, and Illinois, in conformity with your views therein expressed. Very Respectfully, &c. &c. E. R. Hoar, Attorney General.
