September 24, 1869.

Hon. C. M. Hawley.

Salt Lake City, Utah.

Sir:

Without expressing an opinion upon the absolute necessity of your taking the oath of office which Judge Wilson insists upon, it seems to me the easiest and simplest course to avoid all question and difficulty by taking it. It certainly can do no harm, and I should advise you to end the controversy in that way.

Very Respectfully,

E. R. Hoar.
