December 17, 1869.

Hon. J. R. Hawkins,

U. S. House of Representatives.

Sir:

By direction of the Attorney General I transmit herewith certified copies of the papers referred to in your letter of the 15th and 16th instants.

The statement of Mr. Taft comprises a very large number of petty items and details which I do not suppose you desire, and which it would take a longer time to copy than is at the disposal of our limited clerical force. I therefore send only the total, and his certificate. If this should not be sufficient, however, I will prepare a full copy.

Very respectfully,

Your obd't serv't,

M. F. Pleasants,

Ch. Clerk.
