Gentlemen:

Your communication of the 20th ult., in relation to your fee in what is known as the Decatur cotton case, has been received, and referred to the Secretary of the Treasury. As you represent that your services in the case were retained by that Department, the Attorney General will not express any opinion upon the amount of compensation proper to be made to you, unless specially requested to do so by the Secretary.
