Hon. Hamilton Fish,

Secretary of State.

Sir:

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 4th inst., with a copy of a note of the 28th ult., from the British Minister to you enclosed, relative to the trial of William Barry, for the murder of Capt. Spear, of the British Army,—and to say that I have to-day called upon the U. S. Attorney for Dakota Territory for the information you ask for, which I will transmit to you as soon as I receive it.
