April 8, 1870. Hon. M. Welker, Chairman Committee on Retrenchment, House of Representatives. Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 6th instant, enclosing a Resolution of the House of Representatives—and in reply to say that no private buildings in the District of Columbia are now rented or occupied by the government for the use of this Department.
