Sir:

The Attorney General directs me to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 17th instant, enclosing the receipted bill of the artist for the portrait of Attorney General Berrien—and to say that immediately upon the arrival of the picture a check for the amount will be sent to Mr. Maier.

I am also directed by the Attorney General to return you his sincere thanks for your kindness and attention in the matter.
