July 22, 1870. Hon. H. Van Aernam, Commissioner of Pensions. Sir: Your letter of the 30th ult. inquiring if Geo. C. Lamphere, of Galesburg, Ill., is U. S. Commissioner for the Northern District of Illinois was received this morning. In reply I am directed to say that this office has no information as to the names or dates of appointments of U. S. Commissioners. Very Resp. yours, M. F. Pleasants, Chief Clerk.
