Sir:

You are hereby retained by this Department as a special Assistant to the U. S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, to take charge of the defence of Lieut. Wm. T. Cain, 3d U. S. Cavalry, recently indicted in Carlisle, Pa. for assault and battery,—upon your taking the oath required by law to be taken by the District Attorneys of the United States.
