December 5, 1870. Wm. J. Nichols, Esq. Baltimore, Md. Sir: I have received yours of the 29th ultimo, requesting a return of your application for the U. S. Marshalship of Maryland, and the accompanying papers on file in this Department.—It is not the usage of this Department to return such papers to the parties, unless some extraordinary reason is shown. Very respectfully, &c, A. T. Akerman, Attorney General.
