December 5, 1870.

Mr. W. M. Hinman,

Atlantic City

Wyoming Terr.

Sir:

Your letter of the Secretary of the Treasury, of the 16th ult. has been referred to this office.

The charges which you make against the Marshal are of such gravity that I do not feel at liberty to consider them unless they are sustained by something more than bare assertion. If you can furnish affidavits of respectable persons showing misconduct in that officer, proper action will be taken in the case.

Very respectfully,

A. T. Akerman,

Attorney General.
