Secretary of War.

Sir:

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 3d instant, relative to the case of J. F. Gardiner, a forage contractor, charged with perpetrating a fraud upon the United States—and to inform you that the Attorney of the United States for Maryland has been furnished with a copy of your letter, and the papers accompanying the same, and instructed to take the necessary action in the premises, to protect the interests of the Government.
