Sir:

As requested by your telegram of even date herewith, I enclose draft on the Assistant Treasurer of the U. S. at New York for Sixteen hundred and twelve dollars, ($1612) being on account of your compensation and expenses as special counsel to aid in defending claims against the United States under the convention with Mexico of July 5, 1868.

You will be pleased to sign the enclosed receipt, and return it to me at your earliest convenience.
