Sir:

You are hereby retained as special assistant to the U. S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, in the two following cases, now before the Supreme Court of that District: The United States, ex. rel. the Levy Court, vs. the Columbia Turnpike Company; The same, vs. the Washington and Rockville Turnpike Company.

This retainer is upon the understanding that you will not expect compensation from the Government.

You will take, and return to this office, the oath required by law, of District Attorneys.
