Sir:
After a consideration of your letter of the 20th ultimo in relation to the bounty claim of Farragutt and others, I have concluded to authorize you to send a person, at the expense of the United States, to obtain the testimony in Louisiana and elsewhere, to which you refer, provided that the cost to the United States shall in no event exceed $500.
