Hon. Geo. S. Boutwell,

Secretary of the Treasury.

Sir:

I have received your letter of the 24th ult. and the accompanying papers, submitting for my consideration the case of Matthew Engesser, arising under the Internal Revenue laws.

I recommend that it be compromised on the terms proposed, namely, the payment by Engesser of $230, as tax, and of the costs of court. The papers are returned herewith.
