Dec. 27, 1871. Geo. C. Bates, Esq. Salt Lake City, Utah. Sir: I enclose herewith a commission appointing you to the office of Attorney of the United States for Utah Territory. If the same is accepted, be pleased to transmit to the Department a copy of your official oath, and to inform me of the place of your nativity. Very respectfully, A. T. Akerman, Attorney General.
