Aug. 9, 1871.

Messrs. Sherwood & Howland,

Attorneys at Law,

No. 60 Wall st. New York City

Sirs:

I have received your communication of the 14th instant in reference to the proceedings in the Eastern District of New York, against the steamship "Cleopatra," etc.

As the matter more properly pertains to the Secretary of the Treasury than to me, I have referred the papers to that office.

Very respectfully,

A. T. Akerman,

Attorney General.
