Aug. 27 ?8 6, 1871. To His Excellency Samuel Merrill, Des Moines, Iowa. Sir: The case of John Pierce, brought to my notice by your letter of the 23d inst. shall receive immediate investigation. I do not understand why the man should have been confined in jail six months after his sentence, and before delivery at the Penitentiary; and I shall seek an explanation from the officers of the Territory of Wyoming. Very respectfully, A. T. Akerman, Attorney General.
