Oct. 25, 1871. Hon. Samuel H. Treat, Jr. U. S. District Judge, Springfield, Illinois. Sir: I have the honor to enclose herewith a commission appointing Edward R. Poe, Esq. as Marshal of the U. S. for the Southern District of Illinois. I will thank you to hand the commission to Mr. Poe, when he shall have taken the oath, and given bond, as required by law. Very respectfully, B. H.
