Dec. 27, 1871. Mr. A. H. Pettibone Greenville, Tenn. Sir: You are hereby retained as Assistant to the Attorney of the United States for the Eastern District of Tennessee at a compensation of $1500 per annum. You will give notice whether you accept or decline this appointment,—and if you accept, you will take and transmit to this Department the oath required of District Attorneys. Very respectfully, A. T. Akerman, Attorney General.
