March 18, 1871. Hon. Hamilton Fish. Secretary of the State Sir: I am directed by the President to request you to issue a commission appointing Walter H. Smith to be Assistant Attorney General of the United States, agreeably to the enclosed resolution of the Senate. Very respectfully, &c. A. T. Akerman, Attorney General.
