Hon. Geo. S. Boutwell,

Secretary of the Treasury.

Sir:

In pursuance of the request in your letter of the 20th instant, I have directed the District Attorneys for Virginia and the Western District of Tennessee, to confer with the Collectors in their respective Districts in charge of the claims of the United States to lands in those States under the direct tax laws, and to take such measures as will be necessary for the enforcement of the legal rights of the United States in the cases referred to in your letter.
