Aug. 11, 1871. Hon. Wm. W. Belknap, Secretary of War. Sir: In pursuance of the request in your letter of the 8th instant, I have directed the District Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee to appear in the defence of Maynard, who is prosecuted in a Court of that State for acts done in the discharge of his duty while in the Union army. Very respectfully, A. T. Akerman, Attorney General.
