Oct. 13, 1871. Hon. Geo. S. Boutwell, Secretary of the Treasury. Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 11th instant, relative to a suit in the Supreme Court of the State of New York against O. N. Cutler, Esq., late agent of your Department. In reply, I have to inform you that instructions have this day been given to the Attorney of the U.S. for the Southern District of New York to undertake the defence of this suit, and to take the necessary steps for removing it from the States to the United States Courts.
