Oct. 17, 1871. Hon. Wm. McMichael, Assistant Attorney General. Sir: I have the honor to invite your attention to the enclosed letter from Hon. E. B. French, 2d Auditor, with enclosures, and to request that you inform me, at your earliest opportunity, whether or not, in your opinion, it is advisable to make further defence in the case therein referred to.
