Editorial note: The manuscript has not been located and is known only from a transcription in Walt Whitman's Workshop, ed. Clifton J. Furness (Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1928), 55. The imagery and phrasing match several passages in the 1855 preface to Leaves of Grass, suggesting that this manuscript was composed before or early in 1855.

I want no more of these deferences to authority—this taking off of hats and saying Sir—I want to encourage in the young men the spirit that does not know what it is to feel that it stands in the presence of superiors
