Whitman used this photograph as the frontispiece for Two Rivulets, where he captioned it, "Photo'd from life, Sept., '72, Brooklyn, N.Y. by G. F. E. Pearsall, Fulton St." Copies of this photograph were later made by Charles H. Spieler. There have been claims that this image was originally photographed as part of a stereoview, but the one extant “stereo card” appears simply to be two copies of the photo displayed side by side.
