This or two other photos (zzz.00055, zzz.00138) may be the one Whitman described to Horace Traubel as "the Quaker picture: see? the sombrero—the nice adjustment of light and shade" (With Walt Whitman in Camden, Monday, October 1st, 1888). Kurtz was famous for developing methods to photograph shadowed sides of the face.
