The ideas expressed in this manuscript may have been used in the 1856
"Poem of Remembrances for A Girl or A
Boy of These States," which became the sixth poem in "Chants Democratic and Native
American" in 1860. It was subsequently shortened by several stanzas
(1867) and retitled (1872) "Think of
the Soul" before being excluded from
Leaves of Grass
with the publication of the 1881
edition.
