If this photograph is a Kurtz, it must be dated 1865 or later, after Kurtz opened his New York studio. Henry S. Saunders dates it 1862, and some copies are dated by Whitman in 1863. In a letter to William Michael Rossetti, Whitman wrote, "I confess to myself a perhaps capricious fondness for it" (upa.00097).
